The smallest combat submarine class ever deployed by the Soviet Navy. The Malyutka (meaning "Little One") was a coastal torpedo submarine designed for operations in shallow inshore waters where larger submarines could not venture.

The XV series was the most refined iteration of the design, built from 1940 and seeing service through both World War II and the early Cold War in the Baltic, Black Sea, and Pacific, hunting enemy coastal shipping and laying mines in waters inaccessible to conventional submarines.
