Scale Wizard FAQ

What is the LEGO MOC Scale Wizard?

The Scale Wizard is a free interactive tool that helps LEGO MOC builders choose the right scale for their model.

Answer five questions about your subject, available space, and desired level of detail, and the tool recommends the best scale ratio with a full breakdown of model dimensions in studs, centimeters, bricks, and plates.

What does scale mean in LEGO MOC building?

Scale is the ratio between your model and the real-world subject it represents. A scale of 1:100 means your model is 100 times smaller than the original.

Choosing the right scale determines how big your finished model will be, how much detail you can include, and how many bricks you will need. Getting scale right before you start building saves significant time and money.

You can read more about this in our blog post here.

How does the wizard calculate the recommended scale?

The wizard uses your subject's real-world dimensions, your maximum available display length, and your chosen detail level to find the largest scale that fits your space while meeting the minimum stud count for your detail target. It then presents two alternatives: one more compact, one more detailed, so you can compare trade-offs before committing.

You can then verify exact stud dimensions using our LEGO MOC Scale Converter.

What is minifigure scale and should I build at it?

Minifigure scale (approximately 1:44) is the scale at which a standard LEGO minifigure represents an average adult human.

Building at this scale means figures look proportionally correct standing next to your model. It works well for vehicles, buildings, and city scenes, but is less common for large subjects like warships or aircraft where the resulting model would be enormous. The wizard will flag when a recommended scale is close to 1:44.

What is the difference between a desk model, display piece, and exhibition showpiece?

These detail levels set the minimum stud count the wizard targets.

  • A desk model prioritises a compact footprint with simplified shapes, typically under 30 studs long.
  • A display piece balances size and detail, aiming for at least 40 studs.
  • An exhibition showpiece targets 80 or more studs, producing a large, complex model suited to LEGO events or dedicated display cases.

What units can I enter my dimensions in?

The wizard accepts meters, centimeters, feet, and inches for real-world subject dimensions.

For your available display space, you can enter centimeters, inches, or meters. You can mix and match! Enter your ship's length in meters and your shelf size in centimeters if that is how you have the measurements to hand.

Do I need to enter all three dimensions?

No. Only one dimension is required, typically the length, as it is the most important for scale planning.

Width and height are optional but improve the output: if you enter them, the results card shows stud counts and centimeter sizes for all three axes so you can plan your full build footprint.

What does the baseplate count in the results mean?

The baseplate count tells you how many standard 32×32 stud baseplates your model's length would span.

This is useful for planning your build layout and knowing how many baseplates to order before you start. If your model is 96 studs long, for example, you would need at least 3 baseplates end to end.

My recommended scale doesn't fit my space, what should I try?

Use one of the two alternative scales shown below the main recommendation. If neither works, try reducing your detail level from Display to Desk, which allows the wizard to recommend a smaller model at a finer scale.

You can also run the wizard again with a larger space target to see what scale would give you the most detail for a bigger display area.
