The most powerful American battleship never built! The USS Montana BB-67 was approved under the Two-Ocean Navy Act of 1940 as the lead ship of a class of five that would have carried twelve 16-inch guns, displaced over 60,000 tonnes, and been the only American warships capable of matching the Yamato class on paper.

Construction was suspended in May 1942 as the Pacific War made clear that fast carriers had made the slow-moving super-battleship obsolete before her keel was even laid, and the class was cancelled entirely in July 1943 in favour of Essex-class carriers.

Montana remains the only US state never to have had a completed battleship named in its honour.
