The most decorated US Navy ship of all time with 30 battle stars across three wars, the USS Nicholas DD-449 was the first Fletcher-class destroyer commissioned at Bath Iron Works, launching on February 19, 1942 and spending the next 27 years fighting from Guadalcanal to Vietnam.

She earned 16 battle stars in World War II alone, sank two Japanese submarines, led the Flagship Task Group into Tokyo Bay for Japan's surrender ceremony on September 2, 1945, and was personally ordered to be present at that moment by Admiral Halsey in recognition of her valorous Pacific campaign.
