Commissioned in November 1976 and the lead ship of the largest class of nuclear-powered submarines ever built by the United States! The USS Los Angeles gave her name to 62 boats constructed between 1972 and 1996 that formed the backbone of the US Navy's underwater strike force throughout the Cold War.

Laid down at Newport News Shipbuilding in 1972 and designed to match the speed of carrier battle groups while hunting Soviet submarines across the Atlantic and Pacific, SSN-688 could reach depths of 290 metres, carried Mark 48 torpedoes, Harpoon anti-ship missiles, and Tomahawk cruise missiles, and was fast enough that her actual top speed remains classified to this day.

She was decommissioned in 2010 and her sail is preserved at the Los Angeles Maritime Museum. This 334-part LEGO MOC recreates her at 1:260 scale.
