Commissioned on December 31, 1942 and the lead ship of the most numerous class of capital ships built in the 20th century, the USS Essex CV-9 earned 13 battle stars across the Pacific during World War II, survived a kamikaze strike off the Philippines in November 1944, served again in the Korean War, enforced the Cuban Missile Crisis quarantine in 1962, and recovered the Apollo 7 astronauts in 1968 before her final decommissioning in 1969.
