The largest submarines ever built and the inspiration for Tom Clancy's Hunt for the Red October. This is the the Soviet Project 941 Akula class, known to NATO as the Typhoon which displaces 48,000 tonnes submerged, nearly the size of a World War II aircraft carrier, and carries 20 RSM-52 ballistic missiles each tipped with up to 10 independently targetable nuclear warheads.

Built in response to the US Navy's Ohio-class, the six Typhoons that entered service between 1981 and 1989 were so vast their crews enjoyed a swimming pool, a sauna, and bird cages aboard, designed for extended patrols under the Arctic ice.

All six have since been retired, with the last, Dmitry Donskoy, decommissioned in 2023. This free 101-part mini-scale LEGO MOC recreates the Typhoon's unmistakable wide-bodied silhouette.
