One of the largest military aircraft ever built, the Lockheed C-5 Galaxy has been the backbone of the USAF's strategic airlift capability since entering service in 1970. Its cargo compartment large enough to swallow a Chinook helicopter whole or drive four Sheridan tanks straight through its swing-open nose.

Capable of carrying 80% of all US Army equipment and flying it 8,900km nonstop, it has supported every major American military operation from Vietnam to Afghanistan and even air-dropped a Minuteman ICBM from 20,000 feet over the Pacific in 1974.
