Japan's most advanced carrier and the first in the Imperial Japanese Navy to feature an armoured flight deck. The IJN Taiho was commissioned on March 7, 1944 and sank just 103 days later at the Battle of the Philippine Sea after a single torpedo from USS Albacore cracked her aviation fuel tanks. A catastrophic decision by her damage control team to open the ship's entire ventilation system to disperse the fumes instead filled her with explosive vapour, and on June 19, 1944 a spark turned the flagship of the First Mobile Fleet into an inferno, killing approximately 660 of her crew.
