Named after the mythological smith hero of the Finnish national epic the Kalevala, the Ilmarinen was the flagship of the Finnish Navy from her commissioning in 1934 and the most powerful warship Finland ever operated. She was designed as a mobile coastal fortress to deter Soviet Baltic Fleet battleships from Finnish shores.

On September 13, 1941, during Operation Nordwind, she struck two Soviet mines on the return journey and capsized in just seven minutes, taking 271 of her approximately 400 crew to the bottom of the Baltic Sea, where she rests today at 70 metres depth, classified as a war grave.
