Canada's worst peacetime maritime disaster and one of the most overlooked tragedies of the early 20th century. The RMS Empress of Ireland was struck by the Norwegian collier Storstad in thick fog on the St. Lawrence River at 1:55 am on May 29, 1914, and sank in just 14 minutes, killing 1,012 of the 1,477 people aboard including only 4 of the 138 children on board.

Launched in 1906 for Canadian Pacific Railway's Liverpool to Quebec City service, she sank just two years after the Titanic and was largely overshadowed by the outbreak of World War I weeks later, condemned to obscurity despite a death toll that exceeded the Titanic's passenger losses.
