Designed by Swedish-born engineer John Ericsson and commissioned just days before her defining moment, the USS Monitor arrived at Hampton Roads on the night of March 8, 1862, and the following morning fought CSS Virginia to a standstill in history's first battle between ironclad warships.
Her revolutionary rotating gun turret sitting just 18 inches above the waterline made her unlike anything ever seen on the water. The engagement made every wooden warship in the world obsolete overnight. Less than ten months later the Monitor sank in a gale off Cape Hatteras on December 31, 1862, taking 16 of her crew with her.
This free 45-part micro-scale LEGO MOC recreates one of the most historically significant vessels in naval history. A predecessor of the modern-day submarine in the palm of your hand.
