HISTORY
The USS Bowfin (SS-287) is a Balao-class submarine of the United States Navy, launched on December 7, 1942, exactly one year after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Nicknamed the “Pearl Harbor Avenger,” Bowfin completed nine war patrols in the Pacific during World War II, sinking a total of 44 enemy vessels, including merchant ships and warships, making her one of the most successful submarines of the war.
After the war, Bowfin served in various training and reserve roles until she was decommissioned in 1971. Today, she is preserved as a museum ship at the Pearl Harbor Historic Sites in Honolulu, Hawaii.
