The LEGO SS Italis MOC recreates the final form of the SS America which was once an ocean liner in the 1940s. Rebuild its legacy with a simple yet detailed 1:1000 scaled LEGO design!

HISTORY

The SS Italis began her life as the SS America, an ocean liner built by Newport News Shipbuilding for the United States Lines. Launched in 1939 and entering service in 1940, she was designed as a fast and elegant passenger ship for transatlantic crossings, with a capacity of over 1,000 passengers. Shortly after her maiden voyages, she was requisitioned by the U.S. Navy during World War II and served as the USS West Point (AP-23), transporting over 350,000 troops during the war.

After the war, she returned to civilian service as SS America, operating transatlantic and later cruise routes. In the 1960s, she changed owners several times and underwent multiple renamings. In 1964, she was sold to the Greek-owned Chandris Lines, renamed SS Australis, and operated long-distance immigrant voyages between Europe and Australia. In her final years, under Italian ownership, she was renamed SS Italis in 1978 and briefly used as a cruise ship before being laid up. Her long and storied career ended in 1994, when she ran aground off the Canary Islands while being towed for scrapping.
