On the night of September 28, 1994, the MS Estonia departed Tallinn for Stockholm carrying 989 passengers and crew when her 50-tonne bow visor detached in heavy Baltic seas, tearing open the loading ramp and flooding the car deck so rapidly that the ship capsized in under an hour, killing 852 people and leaving only 137 survivors.
Built in 1979 by Meyer Werft in Germany, she had sailed under several names before becoming MS Estonia in 1993 on the Tallinn to Stockholm route, and her loss remains the second deadliest peacetime maritime disaster in European history, directly reshaping international regulations on roll-on/roll-off ferry design.
This 1:1400 scale LEGO MOC recreates her using clever building techniques in a compact design.
