Carrying natural gas cooled to minus 162 degrees Celsius in heavily insulated spherical or membrane tanks, LNG carriers are among the most technically complex and expensive ships ever built. The first commercial voyage took place in 1959 when the converted Methane Pioneer crossed the Atlantic with 2,000 tonnes of liquefied gas. Today a global fleet of over 600 carriers keeps natural gas flowing between producers and import terminals on every continent.
