HISTORY

HMS Rodney was one of two Nelson-class battleships, easily recognised by her unusual all-forward gun layout. Commissioned in 1928, she spent the interwar years with the Atlantic and Home Fleets before entering heavy action in the Second World War. Her defining moment came in May 1941 during the hunt for the German battleship Bismarck, where she closed in at close range and unleashed a devastating barrage, even firing a torpedo — a rare feat for a battleship of her size.

After a short refit in the United States, she shifted to constant frontline duty in the Mediterranean, escorting Malta convoys and bombarding invasion beaches in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy. She later supported the Normandy landings and continued to provide heavy gunfire across France. Worn down from continuous service and never fully modernised, Rodney was retired after the war and scrapped in 1948.
