HISTORY

Michael’s Gate is the only preserved medieval city gate of Bratislava and one of its oldest surviving structures. Built around the year 1300, it formed the northern entrance to the fortified town, protected by walls, a moat, and a drawbridge. The gate was named after the nearby Church of Saint Michael, which once stood outside the city walls.

Over the centuries, the gate underwent several reconstructions, most notably in the 18th century, when it was rebuilt in its present Baroque form and crowned with a statue of Saint Michael slaying the dragon. Despite these changes, parts of its medieval stonework have remained intact, preserving its historical character to this day.
