HISTORY

Tirpitz was the second of the two Bismarck-class battleships built for the Germany Navy during World War II and launched in 1941. She was slightly heavier than her sister ship, Bismarck, which made her the largest battleship ever built by a European power. First stationed in Norwegian waters, Tirpitz served as a powerful deterrent to Allied convoys bound for the Soviet Union. However her action was limited with only a few operations off the coast of Norway before becoming the primary target of repeated Allied attacks. British mini-submarines damaged her in 1943, and later air raids from Royal Air Force bombers finally sank her near Tromsø on 12 November 1944.
