Launched in 1906 and the holder of the Blue Riband for the fastest Atlantic crossing, the RMS Lusitania was the pride of the Cunard Line and at her launch the largest ship in the world, capable of crossing the Atlantic in under five days at over 25 knots.

On May 7, 1915, U-20 fired a single torpedo into her hull off the Old Head of Kinsale, Ireland, triggering a second catastrophic internal explosion that sent her to the bottom in just 18 minutes and killed 1,198 of the 1,960 people aboard, including 128 Americans.

The outrage that followed forced Germany to temporarily abandon unrestricted submarine warfare and irreversibly shifted American public opinion toward entering the war.
